The intercontinental ballistic missile "Sarmat" is capable of carrying several hypersonic shock units. Colonel-General Sergei Karakaev , Commander of the Strategic Missile Forces ( RVSN ) of the Russian Federation , spoke about this on the air of the Russia 1 TV channel , TASS reports.
According to the military, the Sarmat has a more powerful carrier, which is different from the Avangard used with active missiles.
“And it was created, among other things, for the Avangard combat equipment, taking into account the fact that there may be more of them (hypersonic warheads) on this complex,” he said.
Karakaev added that, in his words, there are no analogues of the Sarmat in the world from among those combat systems that are now on combat duty.
Earlier, Director General of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin said that the first regiment, which will be armed with Sarmat ballistic missiles, is planned to be formed no later than this autumn.
As reported in the military department, these missiles will replace the R-36M / R-36M2 “Voevoda” stationary-based complexes in the Strategic Missile Forces. It is noted that "Sarmat" will be able to attack targets both through the North Pole and through the South, overcoming the missile defense systems of a potential enemy, and will be equipped with a wide range of high-yield nuclear weapons.
